Stems CT 03: A Whimsical Coffee Table Inspired by Nature

A Unique Blend of Art and Functionality

The inspiration for Stems_CT_03 comes from the observation of trees and how they repopulate from seeds. The designer, Jeffrey A Day, was captivated by the stems, leaves, and seed pods that hang from trees, and sought to translate their organic beauty into a functional piece of furniture.

What sets Stems_CT_03 apart from other coffee tables is its structural tubing or "stems" that act as the foundational base of the piece. These stems rise above the table surface, adding another dimension to the design and mimicking the unpredictable growth of tree branches. The table surfaces, or "seed pods," are a trilogy of ovals that overlap in a random yet harmonious layout, creating an eye-catching visual effect.

The realization of this design involved the use of bamboo sheet stock and bent tubing. The frame went through several iterations to ensure proper support and strength. The designer experimented with different materials and gauges until achieving the desired result. The final design measures 710mm in width, 915mm in depth, and 500mm in height.

Creating a coffee table that visually conveys the idea of seeds taking root and growing presented a significant challenge for the designer. Transforming a natural life activity into a usable product required a careful balance between art and functionality. However, Jeffrey A Day successfully captured the essence of tree pods and stems, resulting in a truly unique and captivating design.

Stems_CT_03 was created in Seattle, with the project starting in May 2016 and concluding in July 2016. This design has garnered attention and recognition, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that contribute to quality of life improvements.
